How prices are judged

Every verdict on Lot & Lume is an estimate made automatically from listings and results we have collected. Here is how, and where it falls short.

Comparable watches

A price is judged against the same reference number (for example 116610LN), never against the brand as a whole. When we know whether a watch has its box and papers, we compare like with like. When a listing names no reference, we compare it with the most similar listings of the same model by their titles and say so ("rough guide").

How many we need

We give a verdict only with at least 5 comparable prices, and not at all when the comparables vary too much to judge (their middle half spans more than 80% of the median). Asking prices we have not seen recently are left out.

Is this a good price?

For a listing with a fixed price, we place its price among the asking prices for the same reference: in the cheapest quarter it is a good price, up to the 60th percentile fair, up to the 85th high, above that overpriced. Prices far below everything comparable are marked "unusually low": a wrong currency, a part, a damaged piece or a scam is likelier than a bargain.

What to bid

For an auction we use results for the same reference from the last three years: "a steal" up to the lower quarter of results, "fair" up to the median, and "walk away" above the upper quarter, all delivered to your country. An opening bid is not a price. Where we have no results for the reference, a rough bid guide works back from what dealers ask for similar watches, aiming 20% below a dealer once fees and import are included.

Delivered price

We add the buyer's premium the house publishes, shipping, import duty and VAT for your country, using the European Central Bank's daily exchange rates. It is an estimate from published fee terms, not a quote.

Order of results

Search results are ordered by what you choose: ending soonest, newest, or price in euros. The front page shows a changing selection of new and notable listings, at most one or two per seller. No seller pays to be shown or ranked.

Limits

Our results archive is still small for many references, sellers' data can be wrong, and listings change faster than we can check. Treat every verdict as a starting point, and check the watch, the seller and the costs yourself.
